The Fire in Your Belly

Remembering the hidden role of stomach acid in detox, minerals, and emotional digestion

We often talk about detox pathways the liver, the kidneys, the lymph. But detox begins much earlier than most people realise. It starts with something humble and sacred: chewing. From there, the next great gatekeeper is the stomach. And here, one simple substance carries disproportionate power: stomach acid.

This inner flame turns food into nourishment, signals the gallbladder and pancreas, and helps keep the gut terrain safe and balanced. When the flame is strong, digestion feels effortless. You arrive at a meal feeling relaxed and hungry, you leave feeling satisfied but light, and the body completes its work quietly in the background. But when the fire burns low, food can linger. Meals feel heavy. Bloating, burping, or nausea become more common. Stools may carry undigested food. Deficiencies creep in B12, magnesium showing up as fatigue, muscle cramps, or restless sleep. Even the immune system feels the difference, with more frequent gut bugs or imbalances.

There are many reasons this fire dims. Age plays a role, but so do rushed meals, chronic stress, antibiotics, and common acid-suppressing medicines like antacids or PPIs. Minerals matter deeply too without enough sodium, chloride, zinc, and magnesium, the spark simply cannot ignite.

One of the great confusions here is “heartburn.” We’ve been taught to assume burning in the chest means “too much acid.” In reality, discomfort often arises even with normal or low acid, when food ferments in the stomach or the valve at the top relaxes. Acid-suppressing medicine may soothe the symptom, but it doesn’t always reveal the true cause.

So how do we begin to reconnect with this forgotten fire? The first step is noticing the state we eat in. If meals happen quickly, with tension in the body, the stomach doesn’t receive the signal to prepare. Slowing down, chewing well, and arriving in a calmer state make more difference than most realise. Some people find that a few drops of digestive bitters or even a sip of diluted lemon before a protein-rich meal brings a surprising sense of ease. These are small nudges that gently remind the stomach of its role.

From there, we can tend the terrain. Reducing irritation helps giving the lining a rest from refined oils, fried foods, caffeine, alcohol, and gluten for a little while. After meals, simple herbal teas like chamomile, fennel, or ginger support the process, while bitters before meals help switch digestion “on.” Mastic gum and high-quality aloe can soothe and restore the lining, and for those who tolerate them, fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, or kimchi can help restore balance in the microbial garden.

Often, after four to six weeks of soothing and mineral repletion, the body is ready for the next step. At this point, some people gently trial HCl with professional guidance, especially with heavier protein meals. But this is where care is essential. Burning is never the goal. If acid support creates pain or discomfort, it’s simply a message to return to soothing and repair before trying again. The common advice to “increase until you feel a burn and then back off” is not only misguided, it can be harmful.

And what about PPIs and antacids? If you’ve been prescribed them and suspect maybe its the opposite, never stop abruptly. Speak to your healthcare adviser about the best path forward. Meanwhile, you can still support yourself by restoring minerals, slowing meals, and nourishing the lining these foundations help whether or not medication is needed.

Through all of this, it’s important to remember that the stomach does more than digest food. It also digests life. Fear, bracing, and overthinking cool the flame. Safety, trust, and presence allow it to rise. Many notice that when they pause to breathe before meals, eat without distraction, and give thanks, digestion softens naturally.

Your body is not broken. It’s remembering. And if you feel the pull to recalibrate your digestion and minerals, you are warmly invited to explore support with us.
