What your cholesterol is really telling you

One of the most common concerns people bring to us is a high cholesterol reading. And one of the first things we want to explore together is a question that often gets skipped in a ten-minute GP appointment: why is your cholesterol elevated in the first place?

Cholesterol does not rise randomly. The body is far too intelligent for that. Cholesterol is one of the most important protective and repair substances we have. Every cell membrane in your body depends on it. Every steroid hormone begins with it. The brain is rich in it. It is the raw material your body uses to make progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol, and it plays a central role in tissue repair, stress resilience, and immune function.

When cholesterol is elevated, it is often because the body is responding to something. Inflammation, chronic stress, low thyroid function, poor blood sugar regulation, gut dysfunction, infection, injury, and a sluggish metabolic rate are all situations where cholesterol tends to rise. The body is essentially sending out more of its repair material because it perceives a greater need for it.

This is where bioresonance can be genuinely useful. One of the things we appreciate most about it is how it helps us look beneath the surface. Rather than simply reacting to a number, bioresonance allows us to explore what might be driving the body’s response. Hidden pathogens, toxin burden, unresolved emotional stress, and energetic imbalances in organs like the liver, thyroid, and gut can all be factors that standard blood tests simply do not pick up. When these stressors are identified and supported, the body often begins to settle in ways that are reflected in how a person feels, and sometimes in their numbers too.

Magnesium and the missing piece

One thing we notice again and again in clinic is how rarely magnesium gets discussed in the context of cholesterol. Magnesium is sometimes called nature’s natural statin, because people with healthy magnesium levels tend to have healthier cholesterol metabolism without medication. It is involved in hundreds of enzymatic processes including energy production, thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, and cardiovascular health. When magnesium is low, inflammation tends to creep up, stress hormones become more active, and the body loses some of its ability to use cholesterol efficiently.

It is a simple thing worth exploring before reaching for a prescription.

Understanding your numbers: the delivery truck analogy

When you look at an NHS cholesterol result, you will usually see LDL and HDL broken down separately. It helps to think of these as two different kinds of lorries on the road.

LDL carries cholesterol out from the liver to where the body needs it. These are the delivery trucks. HDL picks up cholesterol from around the body and brings it back to the liver for recycling. These are the recycling trucks.

The NHS generally prefers to see lower LDL and higher HDL, and there is good reason for that. A pattern with lots of delivery trucks going out and fewer recycling trucks coming back can suggest the body is under significant repair demand, or that the recycling system is not working as efficiently as it could. From a cardiovascular risk perspective, population research consistently associates higher HDL with better outcomes.

From a metabolic perspective, we find that pattern just as interesting, but we ask a different set of questions. If there is a lot of outgoing demand, what is the body trying to repair? Is the thyroid functioning well enough to keep cholesterol moving and turning over? Is there gut inflammation, blood sugar instability, or a high stress load driving the need for more building material? In clinic, we often see this pattern alongside signs of low-grade inflammation, sluggish detoxification, or nervous system stress, all of which bioresonance can shed light on and support.

Broda Barnes, a physician who spent decades researching thyroid function, observed that elevated cholesterol was frequently a sign of low metabolic rate. When thyroid function was supported, cholesterol would often normalise on its own because the body could finally process and use it properly. Bioresonance is one of the tools we use to assess thyroid energetics and support the organs involved in cholesterol metabolism, including the liver and adrenals, alongside nutritional and lifestyle work.

The bigger picture

What we are really interested in at Inna is not just whether a number is in or out of range. We want to understand the whole pattern. Cholesterol alongside thyroid markers, triglycerides, blood sugar, body temperature, energy levels, digestion, and sleep tells a much richer story than a single reading ever could.

A person with a total cholesterol of 7 mmol/L who wakes up warm, energised, and well rested is in a very different position to someone with the same number who is exhausted, cold, and struggling to recover from illness. The cholesterol number is the same, but what the body is communicating is entirely different.

When someone comes to us with elevated cholesterol, our approach usually involves looking at nutrition, minerals, thyroid function, gut health, and stress load, and using bioresonance to explore what the body’s own signals are pointing towards. It is not about overriding the body’s intelligence. It is about understanding what it is trying to do, and giving it what it needs to do that more efficiently.
